Writer-friendly script support with produced writer/script-editor

As an experienced writer with a variety of scriptwriting credits (details here), Russell has a particular empathy with other writers. He knows what it's like to receive development notes and have to incorporate them into a script.

Having worked as a BBC Drama script editor and script-reader/development consultant for a wide range of TV and film companies (European Script Fund, Movie Acquisition Corporation, BBC, Ffilm Cymru, LWT, ITC Entertainment and more), he has also worked with writers in both development and production and understands the demands and pressures inside the industry.

Russell’s extensive script-based background within the industry combined with his own scriptwriting credits ensures that his approach to giving script notes to other writers is professional, practical but writer-friendly. Based on first-hand experience of being both a produced writer and script editor, it also ensures that feedback can be effectively applied to improve your script(s) as well as your scriptwriting skills in general.

As a freelance script consultant and coach he works with clients ranging from experienced writers, producers and directors to writers who have just begun screenwriting. All are welcome.

Russell also teaches screenwriting.  He has lectured at Cardiff University's department of Continuing & Professional Education, was external examiner on the Screenwriting & Producing BA at Regent's University, London and has mentored numerous writers online. He has also been a guest speaker at other script development courses and events.

Courses are held (in person) in Cardiff and are open to all writers, both new and more experienced.

With scriptwriting credits across the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and S4C as well as numerous commissions to develop his own projects, Russell has extensive experience writing scripts in both production and development. In addition to having worked as a BBC Drama script editor, a development consultant/reader for various companies (where he often supported writers working on their own scripts) and his continuing work as a freelance script editor, this ensures that course content is based on first-hand, practical experience of screenwriting, accurately reflects industry practice and gives a broader insight into the subject as a whole.

Courses cover everything from conceiving original ideas and writing pitch documents through to the technical process of scriptwriting itself. They also look at the role of agents, the commissioning and development process and working on scripts at production level.

A variety of screened material and practical demonstrations are used on the courses to illustrate key screenwriting components under discussion. They also include a number of in-class exercises, scene read-throughs and guest speakers drawn from a roster including other professional writers with network drama/feature film experience, producers, directors, actors, representatives from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and others.
